Part of the Spacecrafted collection, Space 3 captures the awe-inspiring vastness of the cosmos, where depth and beauty extend beyond what the eye can grasp. During his travels in the Himalayas — on the roof of the world — Jan Kath was struck by the pristine night skies of Nepal, far from the glow of civilisation, where stars reveal their full brilliance. Inspired by these vistas and by the extraordinary imagery of the Hubble Space Telescope, the piece translates the majesty of the universe into a tactile, hand-knotted experience beneath the feet.
The palette evokes the boundless theatre of space itself. Deep ultramarine and inky navy form a night-sky ground, while veins of molten copper and amber sweep across the surface like drifting stellar dust. Touches of ivory and soft pearl glimmer subtly, punctuating the composition like distant stars. Layered textures and the interplay of wool and silk allow the colours to shift with light and perspective, creating depth and motion reminiscent of nebulae folding into the cosmos.
Awarded for its innovative design in 2017, Space 3 invites viewers to explore the universe beneath their feet, where colour, texture, and imagination create an otherworldly experience.
